The Lost Valley

Experience ‘Ireland Naturally’ in the rich heritage of the lost ‘Uggool Valley’

'Tripadvisor Voted #1 of 289 Sights and Landmarks in Western Ireland and #4 of 626 things to do in Western Ireland"  (Valid on 9 - 3 - 2018).

A guided Cultural Adventure through this spectacular valley, suitable for all ages. Duration is 3 hours approximately as the heritage and history of The Lost Valley is recounted and explained, while we make our way at a relaxed, leisurely pace on a well developed trail along the different points of interest in the valley.

Located in the heart of 'The Wild Atlantic Way' and sheltered beneath Mweelrea the highest mountain in the west of Ireland. The Lost Valley also offers unique views to the entrance of Ireland's only fjord, Killary, which has been rated among the top ten most outstanding glacial fjord's in the world.

Beyond the end of the road.        "An absolute must if visiting Mayo"

"If it's the Wild Atlantic Experience you're looking for - This is it"

The Lost Valley offers a unique window into the cultural heritage of The West of Ireland. Indeed it is in itself, arguably the finest memorial of The Great Famine that remain today. Visit the ruined famine village and see the multitude of potato ridges that have lain undisturbed and unattended for nearly two centuries.

As The Lost Valley is now an active working farm, visitors can experience life on the farm with pet lamb feeding for younger adventurers, a working sheep dog demonstration and a sheep shearing demonstration in season on request.

The Lost Valley was virtually inaccessible until a road-way was put in place in 1989. For over 3 centuries, at least 7 generations of the Bourke family traversed the mountainside on foot to gain access to their home in the valley. Remaining undeveloped even the stones, removed from the rocky soil during pre-famine potato cultivation, still remain in clusters exactly as they were left in 1851 following the mass evictions from the valley.

The Lost Valley of Uggool is a poignent reminder of times gone by, the silence now undisturbed by the families who once lived and farmed here. It offers a unique window into the cultural heritage of the west coast of Ireland in terms of nineteenth century way of life and the absolutely catastrophic disruptions of the famine and its aftermath.

Here you will take a walk back in time, when children played around the long deserted village now over- grown with hazel and bracken, from which the villagers were so cruelly evicted as the 'Great Famine' ended.

"A fantastic experience of a preserved slice of Irish history and sheer beauty"

Reviewed 20 September 2015

I highly recommend going to discover this part of Irish landscape and history. Gerard and Maureen have done a beautiful job in preserving the authentic nature of this area and making it accessible to experience on a gentle walk over 3 hours. It is a treasured experience filled with story telling, history of the surrounding area, views that take your breath away and where the spirit of the land is palpable. Suitable for all ages.
